Der Freiheitskämpfer für die Rechte der Schwarzen in Südafrika saß von 1962 bis 1990 für seine Überzeugungen in Haft und avancierte zur Symbolfigur des Widerstands gegen die Apartheidpolitik. 1994 wurde Mandela zum ersten schwarzen Staatspräsidenten seines Landes gewählt.
